Steven C. Adamko is an Amazingly Rare High-Level, Multi-Talented, and Multi-Faceted Straight Male Interior Designer who is Women-Centered, plus Emotion and Ambience Focused
There are over 43,756 interior designers currently employed in the United States. 79.0% of all interior designers are women, while 21.0% are men.
But throughout all of history men have been at the top. The Interior Design Hall of Fame – operated by the publication – Interior Design Magazine – points out that even when the majority of interior designers and decorators are female … Interior Design Magazine and the Interior Design Hall of Fame has nevertheless inducted a 75% majority of males over its 35-year history.
Here in Michigan, anybody can be an interior designer or interior decorator, or even call themselves one, without any credentials whatsoever. Why?Because there is no licensing in the State of Michigan as other states have. Every other occupation in the homebuilding industry has to be licensed, except interior designers. That is insane!
The next best thing to licensing is passing the NCIDQ exam, which stands for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification. I passed the NCIDQ exam in 1996.
why does it matter to be a Straight male interior designer?
It matters to a lot of Christians, as well as Born-Again Christians and Bible believing Christians.
If the Temple of God had to use an interior designer, it would have to be a straight (heterosexual) male interior designer. You can reference the Old Testament for more on this matter. The major players in this matter would be King David and King Solomon.
Regarding the workers on the temple God said, “I have filled him (or them) with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts.”
So it is obvious that you have to have Skill, Ability, and Knowledge in the realm of interior design to really be legitimate. The Bible also mentions that passion or zeal, without knowledge is not good. Many female interior designers say or tell you their passion about interior design is what sets them apart or makes them truly expert. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are a lot of passionate golfers out there that can’t even break 100.
In addition to having Skill, Ability, and Knowledge in the realm of interior design; you must also have Insight, Vision, Experience, Talent, and Wisdom to excel in the field of interior design.
A Straight Male Interior Designer Does it BETTER … in every respect … and that Male is Me!
Why does it matter to be NCIDQ certified in the State of Michigan?
As I mentioned before, the State of Michigan has no licensing requirements for interior designers. Yet, every other occupation has to be licensed when it comes to residential buildings. These include architects, builders, contractors, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, HVAC contractors, to name a few. So why is there such a big gaping hole, where interior designers don’t need to be licensed?
Well, I and a whole bunch of others, many years ago, tried to get a licensing bill passed in the state legislature. We were part of ASID. ASID stands for the American Society of Interior Designers and is a professional organization, just like the home builders association. The problem was it didn’t pass because the architects thought we were stepping on their toes. When in reality, we are partners with them. You can’t have an interior without architecture, and you can’t have architecture without an interior. Anyone with common sense can understand that.
To pass the NCIDQ exam, is like passing the bar exam for attorneys. But you have to pass the exam before you can be licensed in either profession. So, if we currently have no vehicle be licensed in the State of Michigan, we should at least have passed the NCIDQ exam. This helps to add legitimacy to everyone who wants to be an interior designer. It also shows seriousness of intent.
But right now, the barrier to being an interior designer is is so low that even a chihuahua to jump over it. This means that the field of interior design is very easily infiltrated by people who have no business being in it, due to their lack of real qualifications for doing a professional job for the client or ultimate consumer.
why am I amazingly rare?
Well for one thing, I have a God-Given ability to see things done before they are actually physically done. I can see, feel, and experience an interior that I have designed or will design, as a complete reality in my mind and in my imagination. I can verbally describe everything to the client, so they can see it, feel it, and experience it as I do; within the limits of their ability to perceive. I help them all in every respect, so that they are truly comfortable, confident, and convinced that the job or project will turn out exactly as I have described it.

Another reason is that I am one of the very, very, very, few who are Male and Straight … And an Interior Designer! I am very proud of that (pun intended), as well as thankful to God. I wouldn’t have it any other way! (BTW … I don’t mean proud in an arrogant way.)
Why Am I Top-Level?
I am wired for Excellence! I have nothing to do with average or mediocre. When people hire me, they get ME! They get all the talents and abilities that I bring to the table. Nobody sees it and feels it like I do. Therefore, I have never used an assistant or an underling. If they saw a fabric, they would not see the applications or the possibilities that I would. And, I operate in the realm of orchestrating a myriad of materials to deliver spectacular results in the visual, emotional, spiritual, tactile, and aesthetic aspects of every interior design.
I’m a Man with a Leaders point-of-view. Women look for a leader and a true leader at that! I have studied women and can relate well to women in every emotional aspect as it relates to interior design that is orchestrated like a musical symphony. The work I do in all aspects of interior design actually sings!
I can go toe-to-toe with any woman with my ability to accurately describe feelings, emotions, thoughts, and everything else that goes into creating interior environments that make people, and especially women, feel absolutely beautiful or handsome if the client is a man. Plus, I can make any interior design appealing to a man and a woman or husband and wife without either of them feeling diminished or disenfranchised in any way!
Why Am I Multi-Talented?
I am very handy. I can work of my hands with both hand tools and power tools. I am carpenter. I wanted to be a carpenter says was five years old, then I wanted to be an architect, and then I wanted to be an interior designer. So really interior design wraps all three of those occupations together in one for me. And as Red Green, Canadian comedian says, “If women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.”
I am not only a master interior designer, but also a lighting designer and furniture designer. I am very architecturally astute, which means that I integrate architecture and interior design in a seamless way. I have a huge respect for architecture. If you don’t have a wonderful respect for architecture as well as an understanding of architecture, you have no hope of being a truly fantastic interior designer.
Some of the furniture that I have designed, I have also built. Furniture design is an important aspect in interior design because it encompasses not only furniture, but also millwork, moldings, and other aspects of interior design and architecture.
I design lighting, so that all aspects of the interior design are presented in their best light. Colors are how you light it, because the color of objects is actually in the light itself, whatever type that light is, whether fluorescent, incandescent, or LED. It’s the lamp or bulb that does the actual work. The fixture merely holds the lamp or bulb, and helps to control it in some form or fashion. Lighting design is based on beam spreads, intensity, foot candles, lumens, and atmospheric effects that the lamps or bulbs contribute individually or in concert with the rest of the lamps or bulbs.
I can do any type of interior. Traditional, transitional, contemporary, eclectic, and anything in between. Plus, I can deliver the right look and ambience for all of them; that is personally tailored to you.
I am the Founder, Producer, and Host of the Interior Design Beat podcast on Apple, on Spotify, on Libsyn, on Player.FM, on iHeart, and other major podcast platforms.
I am also a Master Teacher of interior design with classes and courses online and around the world.
Why Am I Multi-Faceted?
In my interior design practice I operate like a Physician, Attorney, Expert Archer, and Ophthalmologist.
Like the Physician and a Doctor, I listen to what the “problem” is or what the client needs, wants, and doesn’t want. I ask the proper questions to get to the “root of the problem.” I take the proper “measurements,” document the results, analyze the results, and then prescribe the proper and efficacious solutions.
Like an attorney, I do my “due diligence.” I ask the right questions, to get the right answers, to get the right results. Then I substantiate my findings, suggestions, and course of action with the proper selections of elements and materials. I conclude by presenting a full body of evidence that culminates in a rich and satisfying outcome.
Like an expert archer, I set up the Target and I have hit the bulls-eye every time for the last 42 years! This is a very rare attribute to find in any interior designer.
Like an Ophthalmologist, I may not check your sight via your eye-balls, but I will check your vision, which is what you see with your imagination and between your ears.
I take my job quite seriously, yet I have a lot of fun with my clients as I teach them along the way. In doing so, they not only understand the process, but they have fun with it, too. Being actively involved enriches their experience and heightens their appreciation of their new environment. An educated client is a better, happier client. Plus they’re just more fun to work with! This is the vital importance of real communication in all its forms, including words, sketches, drawings, and detailed specifications.
Finally, I bring the “Magic Experience of Ambiance.” It is the intangible aspect that goes far beyond a mere “look”. The aspect of ambiance brings depth, orchestration, vitality, musicality, animation, and pure sensory enjoyment to your environment and life. To that end, I am dedicated.
